Hourglass is one of my first video essays where my voice was also a protagonist. Initially, my videos were direct renditions of my published poems, produced by me but read and directed by other people. In this case, I dared to challenge a certain structure, perhaps one that can be found in a printed text, and to remove the imposition of a chronological sense of time, by replacing certain expectations of order and control with an editing that's a bit more jolting. It is important to mention that this text was initially and previously published as a flash fiction, but when I transferred it into a video essay format, I decided to use certain elements that are important for me as an experimental filmmaker, such as the unexpected usage of sound, the layering of images, but in particular the disorienting aspects that certain cuts can provoke, which also is an attempt to emulate and echo the maddening sensation that the very text introduces.
