This piece was created for a Call for Scores by the treble vocal choir known as Lorelei Ensemble. The theme called for songs that spoke to their winter concert theme of fire and ice while infusing the work with experimental sensibilities. Upon meeting Maizie at an Anyfolk event in Richmond, VA and purchasing her collection of poetry known as Snake Milk & Honey I fell in love with the nature centered themes in the poetry, particularly on a page marked by a match tied into the binding where the poem "A Meditation" was printed. After a solid month of daily composing I submitted the piece to Lorelei Ensemble and found out a few months later via Instagram that they had selected a different work. Initially I was angered, I spent so many hours of unpaid labor on this project to not even receive a rejection notice. Upon further reflection I decided that I still wanted to hear how this piece would turn out and being that I am a professional choral vocalist, I figured I would try my hand at singing all of the parts. Created in my Museum District apartment in Richmond I superimposed reverb to further the vision I had of this short piece being performed in a majestic cathedral space. It felt so good to hear the fruit of my labor come together, and while I would love to hear this truly performed and interpreted by an ensemble, I feel content finally hearing the piece speak aloud.
