Blackbird, In Previous Issues, v12n1

Blackbird publishes new issues twice a year. The notion of “issue” is both a nod to the print journal and a way for us to call attention to the new work of a limited number of writers. However, publishing online allows us keep all issues available for reading, listening, and viewing. On this page, we wish to point you toward some of the content you may have missed but which still lives in our Archives.

		Victoria Chang Victoria Chang’s poetry can be found as far back as v3n2, where two poems are included along with audio versions of each. Three more poems appeared in our v4n2 issue, along with a review of Chang’s first book, Circle. Two of Chang’s poems can be found in v6n2 and five were included in v8n1. A review of her second collection of poetry, Salvinia Molesta, appears in v8n2. Four new poems from Chang’s upcoming third collection, The Boss, appear in v12n1.

		Norman Dubie Blackbird began publishing Norman Dubie’s book-length futurist poem, The Spirit Tablets at Goa Lake, with “Book of the Jewel Worm” in v1n2. The other two sections, “Book of the Jaspers” and “The Book of the Crying Kanglings,” appeared in v2n1 and v2n2 respectively. A master menu connects the sections across the three issues. Five additional poems by Dubie appear in v7n1, seven poems in v10n1, and four poems in v11n2.

		Claudia Emerson An audio interview with Claudia Emerson appears in v1n2, along with Susan Settlemyre Williams’s review of Pinion, Emerson’s second collection of poetry. Four poems appear in v2n1 that were later included in Emerson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning collection, Late Wife. Williams reflects on Emerson’s career in an essay in v5n1. Five poems from Figure Studies appear v7n1, and a reading by Emerson, recorded at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 2008, is featured in v8n1. The title poem from Secure the Shadow appears in v9n1. New poems appear in v12n1.

		George Garrett Fiction by George Garrett appears in Blackbird v1n1, v3n1, and v7n1. An interview with the author, conducted by Blackbird book review editor and literary editor Susan Settlemyre Williams, accompanies his story, “Empty Bed Blues,” in v1n1. Garrett's comic play in two acts, "Garden Spot, U.S.A.," is featured in v4n2's Gallery section. Blackbird v7n1, which observed Garrett’s passing in 2002, includes an essay by Kelly Cherry on Garrett’s body of work, as well as a poem by Garrett.

		David Huddle David Huddle's poem “The Major of Glory River” can be found in Blackbird v6n1. His short story, “The Way of the Blue-Winged Wangdoodle,” was published in v7n2. An excerpt from Huddle's forthcoming novel, The Faulkes Chronicle, appears in Blackbird v12n1.

		Howard Risatti Art historian, critic, and curator Howard Risatti has frequently been represented in Blackbird by his contributing text for various catalogues and curatorial efforts, such as “Art and Artifice” in issue v10n2 and, currently, “United by Ritual,” in v12n1. In Blackbird v2n1, we featured audio and a transcript of a panel discussion with Howard Risatti on the works of multimedia artist Sheila Pepe. In v3n1, we published Risatti’s interview with distinguished art critic Peter Schjeldahl. An essay by Risatti appears in Blackbird v4n2 commemorating the life and work of the artist Richard Carlyon.

		Eleanor Ross Taylor Poems by Eleanor Ross Taylor as well as an audio interview appeared in v1n1, and poems also appear in v7n1. In v9n2, Susan Settlemyre Willams reflected on Taylor’s fifty years as a published poet and noted that, all along, Taylor’s work has been characterized by “absolute originality” and a “self-directedness.” Fifteen previously unpublished poems, accompanied by drafts, appear in v11n1, as part of a suite honoring her life and work. A previously unpublished essay appears in v12n1 as part of the Wayside Writers Reading Loop.

		Peter Taylor Peter Taylor’s long story in two parts, “The Oracle at Stoneleigh Court,” appears in Blackbird v7n1, along with an essay by Blackbird senior editor Mary Flinn, analyzing the story and placing it in the context of Taylor’s later work: “As the layers of the stories reveal themselves,” Flinn writes, “you notice that they are not in the business of surface mining. The apparent ease with which they are being told is a very slippery critter.” A broken-line prose piece by Taylor, as well as a 1988 interview with the writer, appears in v12n1 as part of the Wayside Writers Reading Loop.

		Ellen Bryant Voigt Audio and text of Ellen Bryant Voigt’s ten-part poem, “The Feeder,” appear in v3n2, along with an interview conducted by Blackbird senior editor Gregory Donovan, and a lecture given by Voigt at the 26th Annual Festival of Poetry in New Hampshire. A recorded conversation between Voigt and students and faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University appears in v6n1. Susan Settlemyre Williams reviews Voigt’s Messenger: New and Selected Poems 1976-2006 in v6n2. A new poem appears in v12n1.

		Jake Adam York Blackbird first published Jake Adam York’s poetry in v3n2, where four poems are accompanied by audio versions. Four more poems appear in our v5n2 issue, and one in v8n2. In v4n1, Blackbird senior editor Gregory Donovan interviews York. A review of York's Murder Ballads can be found in v5n1, while York’s second collection, A Murmeration of Starlings, is reviewed in v7n2. In the current issue, v12n1, “Jake Adam York Remembered” responds to York’s death by looking back on his contributions to literature and the literary community.

		Matthew Zapruder Matthew Zapruder’s poems, “Sun Bear” and “Public Art,” appear in v11n2. Also included in the features section of v11n2 is audio of a reading by Dana Levin and Matthew Zapruder as part of the Virginia Commonwealth University Writers Series, where Zapruder can be heard reading “Public Art,” along with several new poems. Audio of a conversation between Levin, Zapruder, and VCU students at the time of their visit is featured in v12n1.
