Recent Awards for Current and Previous Blackbird Contributors

Charles Wright received the Library of Virginia’s 2013 Literary Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sandra Beasley and David Keplinger were awarded FY14 Artist Fellowships from the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities.

Dan Albergotti won the 2013 Crab Orchard Series in Poetry Open Competition for his collection, Millennial Teeth (forthcoming from Southern Indiana Press).

Joshua Poteat was a finalist for the 2013 New Michigan Press/DIAGRAM chapbook contest for his collection, For the Animal (New Michigan Press, 2013).

Kara Candito received the 2013 Agha Shahid Ali Poetry Prize. Spectator, her second collection, will be published by University of Utah Press in spring 2014.

Phillip B. Williams, Natalie Shapero, and Matthew Nienow received 2013 Ruth Lilly Fellowships from the Poetry Foundation.

Robert Krut received the 2012 Melissa Lanitis Gregory Poetry Award for This Is the Ocean (Bona Fide Books, 2013).

Sandy Longhorn won the Jacar Press Full Length Book Contest for her second collection, The Girlhood Book of Prairie Myths (Jacar Press, 2013).

Dan O’Brien’s The Body of an American was the recipient of the 2013 Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History, as well as the 2013 PEN Center USA Award for Drama.

Philip Levine was awarded the Academy of American Poets’ Wallace Stevens Award for lifetime achievement.

Cynthia Hogue is the recipient of the 2013 Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets.

Jamaal May has been named the winner of the 2013 Indiana Review Poetry Prize.

Caitlin Doyle has been awarded the Margaret Bridgman Scholarship in Poetry through the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference in Middlebury, VT, August 2013.

Lilah Hegnauer's collection of poems, Pantry, was selected for the inaugural New Southern Voices Poetry Prize, and is forthcoming from Hub City Press in 2014.

Maggie Smith won the 2012 Dorset Prize from Tupelo Press for her collection The Well Speaks of Its Own Poison.
