Recent Awards for Current and Previous Blackbird Contributors

Ngozi Anyanwu’s play, Good Grief, won first place for the inaugural Humanitas/CTG Playwriting Prize in 2016.

Beth Bachmann was awarded a 2016 Guggenheim Fellowship in Poetry.

Rick Barot was awarded a 2016 Guggenheim Fellowship in Poetry, and he was shortlisted for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in poetry for his collection, Chord (Sarabande Books, 2015).

Nicky Beer is a finalist for the 2016 Colorado Book Award in Poetry for her collection, The Octopus Game (Carnegie Mellon, 2015).

Jenny Browne's poem, "In the Unlikely Event of a Water Landing," was a finalist for the 2015 Best of the Net anthology.

Anders Carlson-Wee was awarded a 2016 McKnight Artist Fellowship in Creative Writing.

Jennifer Chang’s manuscript Some Say the Lark has been chosen by Alice James Books as Editor’s Choice and will be published in October 2017.

Victoria Chang’s children’s book, Is Mommy? (Beach Lane Books, 2015), was named a New York Times Notable Children’s Book for 2015.

Erica Dawson won the 2016 Poets’ Prize for her collection, The Small Blades Hurt (Measure Press Inc., 2013).

Jehanne Dubrow’s manuscript, Dots & Dashes, won a Crab Orchard Series in Poetry Open Competition Award and is scheduled for publication by Southern Illinois University Press in 2017.

Claudia Emerson’s poem, “Bird Ephemera,” was included in the 2015 Best of the Net anthology.

Tarfia Faizullah was featured in the 3rd Annual Harvard Law School International Women’s Day Portrait Exhibit.

Claudia Rankine’s Citizen will be adapted for the stage and will headline the Primary Stages 2016 – 2017 season.

Nomi Stone’s manuscript, Kill Class, was a finalist for the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry Open Competition Award.

Jean Valentine was shortlisted for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in poetry for her collection, Shirt in Heaven (Copper Canyon Press, 2015).

Matthew Zapruder was named poetry column editor for The New York Times Magazine. His appointment runs through spring 2017.
