Recent Awards for Current and Previous Blackbird Contributors

Three of Sandra Beasley’s poems, "The Sniper Dance," "Weak Ocean" and "Bass Pro Shops," received the 2016 Larry Neal Writers’ Award in Adult Poetry.

Nicky Beer’s collection, The Octopus Game (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 2015), received the 2016 Colorado Book Award for poetry.

Two-Headed Boy, a chapbook by Anders and Kai Carlson-Wee, was selected by Laura Kasischke for the 2015 David Blair Memorial Chapbook Prize. The book was designed by Blackbird contributors Jamaal May and Tarfia Faizullah, and is available for pre-order from Organic Weapon Arts.

Wynn Chapman’s “The War of the Ashes” (published in v14n2 of Blackbird) was recognized as a notable essay in Best American Essays 2016.

Kelly Cherry was honored with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s 2016 Alumni Lifetime Achievement award.

The National Book Foundation awarded Cave Canem its 2016 Litearian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community. Blackbird contributor Cornelius Eady co-founded Cave Canem with poet Toi Derricotte in 1996.

Norman Dubie was awarded the 2016 International Griffin Poetry Prize for his book, The Quotations of Bone (Copper Canyon Press, 2015).

Beth Ann Fennelly has been named Poet Laureate of Mississippi, a post she will hold for four years. 

John Hoppenthaler has received the North Carolina Poetry Society’s 2016 Brockman-Campbell Book Award for his collection, Domestic Garden (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 2015). The award is given annually for the best book of poetry published by a North Carolinian in the preceding year.

Ethelbert Miller was a special honoree at Washington, D.C.’s 31st Annual Mayor’s Arts Awards.

Jon Pineda, Joshua Poteat, and the late Claudia Emerson, all affiliated with Blackbird, were finalists for the 2016 Library of Virginia Literary Awards. Jon Pineda’s collection, Little Anodynes (University of South Carolina Press, 2015), took home the prize.

Laura Van Prooyen’s book, Our House Was on Fire, has received the 2015 Writers’ League of Texas Book Award in poetry.

The Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) awarded Paisley Rekdal’s The Broken Country the 2016 AWP Prize for Creative Nonfiction.

Tess Taylor was awarded a 2016–2017 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to work at the Seamus Heaney Poetry Centre in Belfast. 

Sharon Wang received the 2016 Kundiman Poetry Prize for her manuscript, The Republic of Mercy.
