Recent Awards for Current and Previous Blackbird Contributors

Thunder Boy Jr. by Blackbird contributor Sherman Alexie received a 2017 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award for 2017.

Blackbird contributors Victoria Chang, Jennifer Grotz, and Claudia Rankine are recipients of 2017 Guggenheim Fellowships in Poetry. Fellows are appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise.

Carolyn Forché is one of eight recipients of this year’s Windham-Campbell Prize, administered by Yale University. She is the first poet to receive the award.

Wayne Miller is the 2017 University of North Texas Rilke Prize winner for his book of poetry, Post-. The prize recognizes a book published by a mid-career poet that demonstrates exceptional artistry and vision.

Vi Khi Nao, Phillip B. Williams, and C. Dale Young, all Blackbird contributors, have been named 2017 Lamda Literary Award finalists.

Catherine Pierce is the recipient of the 2017 Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Poetry Prize for her book, The Tornado is the World.

Blackbird contributors Rachel Richardson, Lindsay Tigue, and C. Dale Young were finalists for the Jacar Press Julie Suk Award. The award recognizes the best book of poetry published by an independent literary press in 2016.

Jean Valentine was selected as the 2017 recipient of Yale’s Bollingen Prize for Poetry. The prize is awarded every two years for the best volume of poetry published in those years, or for a poet’s lifetime achievement in his or her art.

Blackbird contributor Phillip B. Williams is the recipient of the 2017 Kate Tufts Discovery Award for his book, Thief in the Interior. A review of Williams’ book appeared in v15n1 of Blackbird.

David Wojahn’s poem, “Absolute Rhythm,” which appeared in Blackbird v15n2, was selected for a Pushcart Prize. The poem will appear in the forthcoming Pushcart Prize XLII: Best of the Small Presses (2018).

High Grass, a new play by Blackbird contributor Irene Ziegler, was featured at the Sun Valley Center For the Arts in Hailey, Idaho as part of their BIG IDEA series, now in its 15th year.
