KATHRYN M. JOHNSON

Kathryn M. Johnson (1878–1954) was an American teacher, bookseller, writer, and activist. She was the author, along with Addie Hunton, of Two Colored Women with the American Expeditionary Forces (Brooklyn Eagle Press, 1920), based on their experiences serving in World War I. Johnson was among the first members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) when the organization was founded in 1909. For the NAACP, she worked as a sales representative and as a branch organizer. She later worked for the YMCA. Johnson continued to work as an activist later in life, promoting literacy as a way to fight racial oppression as a bookseller.  end
