Recent Awards for Current and Previous Blackbird Contributors

Blackbird contributors Beth Ann Fennelly and Catherine Pierce received individual artist fellowships from the Mississippi Arts Commission.

“The Vexations: A Novel” by Caitlin Horrocks, Blackbird contributor, has been selected as a finalist for the 2020 American Library in Paris Book Award. The winner will be announced in November.

Blackbird contributor Colson Whitehead received the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction. His novel The Nickel Boys won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction.

Memorial Drive: A Daughter’s Memoir by Natasha Trethewey and Just Us: An American Conversation by Claudia Rankine, both Blackbird contributors, have been selected for the shortlist for the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence.

The Battle Between the Frogs and the Mice: A Tiny Homeric Epic, translated from the Greek by Blackbird contributor A.E. Stallings, has been shortlisted for the 2020 National Translation Award for poetry.

Blackbird contributor Victoria Chang’s poetry collection Obit has been selected for the longlist for the 2020 National Book Award for Poetry.

If the Girl Never Learns, a poetry collection by Blackbird contributor Sue Silverman, won two gold awards in the Human Relations Indie Book Award Series.

Blackbird contributor Traci Brimhall received the Poetry Society of America’s Cecil Hemley Memorial Award for 2020. Blackbird contributor Tyler Mills was a finalist for this award.

“Possession,” an essay by Blackbird contributor Traci Brimhall, received the Annie Dillard Award for Creative Nonfiction in the Bellingham Review’s 2020 literary awards.

Blackbird contributor Jehanne Dubrow received the 2020 Firecracker Award for Creative Nonfiction for throughsmoke.

The Virgin of Prince Street, a collection of essays by Blackbird contributor and editor Sonja Livingston won a 2019 Foreword INDIES award.

The Academy of American Poets awarded Blackbird contributors Beth Ann Fennelly and Margaret Gibson Poets Laureate Fellowships.

Blue Marlin by Blackbird contributor Lee Smith was named an Okra Pick from Authors ‘Round the South.

Blackbird contributors Ada Limón, Diane Seuss and Brian Teare were awarded Guggenheim Fellowships.

Blackbird contributor Carolyn Forché was awarded the Lannan Literary Award for Poetry.

Memorial Drive by Blackbird contributor Natasha Trethewey and Hieroglyphics by Blackbird contributor Jill McCorkle were named finalists for the 2021 Southern Book Prize.

The New York Times named three Blackbird contributors’ books on their “100 Notable Books of 2020” list: Just Us by Claudia Rankine, Memorial Drive by Natasha Trethewey, and Obit by Victoria Chang.
