WENDY EWALD | In Peace and Harmony: Carver Portraits

Acknowledgments

In Peace and Harmony: Carver Portraits was organized by the Hand Workshop Art Center as the fourth installment of its annual exhibition series, On Site / Artists' Projects. Accompanying the Carver installation were related exhibitions of Ewald's work in the center's galleries (May 7 – July 25, 2004) and at the Children's Museum of Richmond (May 7 – September 6, 2004).
A book documenting the project is currently in production and should be available early next year.

Many people gave their energy, enthusiasm, and expertise to this multi-site project. Foremost among them is Shannon Smith, Principal of Carver Elementary School, who provided invaluable assistance from the start. We acknowledge with gratitude and admiration the participation of Carver students Marco Baylor, Celine Crawley, Jovan Curry, Cevonte Jackson, Chai Dasha Jackson, Chelbany Lewis, Latia Lewis, Kentrell McCoy, U’maana Ricks, Tonette White, and Xavier Woolridge.

This project would not have been possible without the help and participation of Barbara Abernathy and Leah Lamb, Carver-VCU Partnership; Cathy Howard, Director, VCU Office of Community Programs; Jim Panos, Turia Pope, and Michelle Young-Stone, VCU Creative Writing Program; Laura Browder, Associate Professor, VCU English Department; Michael Lease, VCU Photography Department; Peter Mauney; Clifford Altschull, President, Brooks Gray Sign Company; and the Carver Area Civic Improvement League. Special thanks go also to Randee Humphrey and Claire Mehalick of the Children's Museum of Richmond, Angela Patton of Art 180, Chris Iden, Taylor Dabney, Annie and David Chalkley, Page and Sandy Bond, and Elizabeth King and Carlton Newton.

The following individuals were instrumental in securing sites for the Carver installation: Jack H. Broadway, General Manager, Vasco; Mary P. Broughton, University Architect, VCU Facilities Management; C. Blaine Garrett, Real Estate & Permitting Consultant, Dominion Virginia Power; Grayson Jennings; Gladys Johnson; Alice Jones, Manager, Kroger; Shawn Musachio, General Manager, Unifirst Corporation; Sergeant Santa; Frank A. Wood, Chairman, Computer Environment II; Ron Hunt and Tom Wilkinson, Genesis Properties, Inc. We are grateful for their interest and support.

Hand Workshop staff member Regula Franz, an immensely talented photographer herself, has gone way beyond the call of duty in documenting the various sites of this installation. Scouting photographic vantage points with her, over the course of many outings to Carver, has been an especially enjoyable way to become better acquainted with the work.
