PIVOT POINTS  |  Second Generation Painter

Reni Gower

The works on paper for this exhibition blend a fluid improvisational painting approach with a repetitively structured and analytical one. Through patterning, references are made to the decorative arts (textiles and quilts) and technology (the binary code of zeroes and ones). By integrating a handcrafted sensibility with a technological one, I create intricate layers of information that reflect but also counter the hybridized nature of our fragmented culture. My intention is to slow the viewer down, to reacquaint the viewer with his/her visual senses, and to assert the benefits to be gained through concentrated visual explorations. The end result embraces the dynamic forces of duality and balance. This in turn offers an equation in which the answer is greater than the sum of its disparate parts. As one of the artists representing the middle generation in this exhibition, I have the pleasure of being professionally connected to all of the artists. As a student, my professors' encouragement empowered me to find my voice as a young artist. As a teacher, I have striven to repay that support by extending it to the next generation.
