After reading our proposal for Adaptation Syndrome last fall, Evangeline felt an immediate connection to the exhibition’s purpose. In an e-mail to Byron Roche, her dealer in Chicago, she stated, “I hadn’t realized until reading the definition of adaptation syndrome that this is exactly what happened to me as I first began to shoot the work out in Albuquerque. The next morning I was once again able to focus as I had before 9-11 . . . albeit differently. I healed myself with it, even though I didn’t do it with the conscious intention of healing or adapting.”
